Residential Driveways

Driveways and approaches or aprons (the portion between the sidewalk and the street), can be constructed of one or a combination of asphalt, concrete, or brick. Seal coating a residential driveway as well as constructing a service walk leading from the driveway to the house do not require permits or inspections.

Driveway ribbons that are usually constructed of a different material than the driveway and along one or both sides of it however, do require a permit as well as the normal inspections. The Village no longer allows construction of ribbons in the approach part of the driveway, (the portion between the sidewalk and the street.)

A bond to protect the Village right-of-way against possible damage will have to be posted by the applicant at the time the permit is received regardless of the type of material used for construction. This bond is fully refunded after a final inspection of the driveway proves no damage was done and the debris was removed.

The following are major specifications for each material used:

Asphalt:

6” compacted gravel (CA-6 Coarse Aggregate Gradation), gravel may have to be added to achieve this minimum depth of stone.

2” asphalt (Class I Surface Course), stone may have to be removed to make room for the required 2” thickness of pavement.

Concrete:

4” compacted gravel (CA-6 Coarse Aggregate Gradation).

4” concrete reinforced with 6”x 6” welded wire mesh in the driveway portion only.

The Village requires 5” concrete in the approach portion of the driveway. Fiber reinforced concrete may be used in either case.

6 bag ready mix concrete (may include fiber reinforcement).Contraction joints must be cut or troweled at appropriate intervals.

Brick:

Since brick dimensions vary, the driveways must be constructed in accordance with the requirements set forth by the brick manufacturer, however the total of compacted CA-6 Coarse  Aggregate Base, sand and brick cannot be less than the minimum 9 inches in thickness. Inspection requirements for this type of driveway are the same as those for asphalt and concrete driveways.

Inspection Requirements:

The inspections by the Village are performed at the following stages of a driveway construction:

After the excavation, the sub-grade will be inspected for depth and soil condition.

After the gravel base is installed and compacted, it will be inspected for condition, gradation, compaction, and thickness. Also the available depth for the minimum 2” asphalt or 4”concrete will be checked. For concrete driveways, placement of the wire mesh will be verified.

After the construction of the driveway is completed, a final inspection of the work will be done. The overall condition of the constructed driveway will be observed. Also, evidence of any damage caused by the construction to the sidewalk, approach, parkway area, curb and gutter, and the pavement in the street and the removal of debris and construction waste will be the taken into consideration in releasing the preservation bond. Damage done prior to construction will not effect the release of the bond.

Please note that inspections are to be scheduled 24 hours in advance with the Engineering Department at (630) 871-6220.

In addition, please make sure to call and re-schedule your inspection if for any reason your project will not be ready for the day and time it was specified.

We ask the residents to contact JULIE (Joint Utility Locating Information for Excavators) at (800) 892-0123 to schedule an underground utility location prior to any digging.
