In 1992 the USEPA introduced ENERGY STAR as a voluntary labeling program to promote energy-efficient products that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Initial ENERGY STAR products included computers and monitors, home heating and cooling equipment, major appliances, office equipment, lighting, and home electronics to name a few.

The ENERGY STAR label has expanded to include home as well as commercial and industrial building construction.

Over 12,000 private and public sector organizations have become ENERGY STAR partners including the Village to assist in providing technical information and tools consumers need to choose energy-efficient solutions and best practices. ENERGY STAR has successfully delivered energy and cost savings nation-wide, saving businesses, organizations, and consumers approximately $16 billion in 2007 alone. Over the past decade, ENERGY STAR program has been a driving force behind the development of technological innovations such as efficient fluorescent lighting, power management systems for office equipment, and low standby energy use.
