Swimming Pools

Prior to issuing a pool permit, the Engineering Department will investigate the following issues in relation to the pool:

1- Will the “above-ground” pool be in the Flood Plain?  If you suspect your lot may be in the flood plain, or if you are not sure about this important factor, please contact the Engineering Department at (630) 871-6220 to check. Installing a swimming pool in the flood plain involves more storm water management issues requiring further investigation of the grade elevations on the yard. Flood plain issues are not nearly as significant for in-ground pools where the surface of the water is at or below the Base Flood Elevation (BFE), however one should consider the negative effects of flooding on an in-ground pool when built in a high risk area.

2- Will the “above-ground” pool be a minimum of 5 feet and the “in-ground” pool a minimum of 10 feet away from any underground electric, phone, or TV cable, etc. or a minimum of 10 feet away from any overhead cable. These requirements are part of the National Electrical Code and are highly important for the safety of anyone using the pool. If the minimum distance requirements are not met, either the pool location or the cables will have to be moved. We ask the residents to contact JULIE (Joint Utility Locating Information for Excavators) at (800) 892-0123 to schedule an underground utility location prior to any digging.

3- Will the pool be blocking any drainage routes or swales? Pools and other structures cannot be blocking the free flow of surface storm waters that are part of the overall design of the subdivision.

4- Will the pool or the yard have a fence meeting the minimum 4’ height requirements for the safety of small children? Such a fence must be installed as part of the pool unless the yard already has a fence meeting this requirement on its perimeter.

5- A preservation bond will be required for the construction of in-ground pools to insure against possible damages to the right-of-way area in front of the residence.
