For many years farmers have stored rainwater in barrels or underground vaults called cisterns.

The stored water could then be used to water plants and livestock.

Today homeowners can still collect the rainwater from downspouts into rain barrels, and use it to water their landscaping.

You can purchase rain barrels online or from a local conservation group called the Conservation Foundation
