Many northeastern Illinois communities, as well as Carol Stream, get their water from Lake Michigan. In fact they use 2 billion gallons per day!

The amount of water that can be taken from the lake has been set by a U.S. Supreme Court decree and by agreement with other states and Canada.

Currently the amount allocated is almost entirely being used and it doesn’t appear our limit will be increased.  It is also predicted that water usage will increase 12% by the year 2020.

Therefore it is imperative that municipalities that get their water from Lake Michigan do not waste this valuable resource, but instead protect it through water conservation measures.
