  • It has been estimated by the USEPA that the United States generated 136 million tons of construction and demolition (C&D) debris in 1996!

That was over ten years ago. All this material was being landfilled or illegally dumped. Several landfills near us have closed or will be closing, Mallard Lake and Settlers Hill.

The C&D debris will now have to be transported to a site much further away. This is costly and continues to take up more land.

There are alternatives. We can reduce the amount of C&D materials generated, reuse the materials or recycle them. Reduction is the first choice followed by reuse and then recycling. Landfilling should be the last alternative. The options are prioritized in this order because reduction has the least impact and isn't as costly as landfilling.

The Village has used these to control the amount of C&D debris that is generated. Only enough material that is needed for construction activity is utilized. Materials are left in place if there isn't a need to have them removed. This not only reduces waste but also saves on costs because we don't have to pay to have it removed, hauled away and landfilled.

When the Village built the Lies Road Bike Path we reused the existing concrete sidewalk that was removed for the base of the new path. We also used recycled concrete for the new Village Hall parking lot and we recycled 228 cubic yards from our sidewalk and curb projects. In addition we used over 4,800 tons of recycled asphalt in last year's roadway maintenance projects!
