    Open House Signs

    This handout is intended to provide information regarding the requirements for open house signs in the Village of Carol Stream. Please note that permits are not required to display open house signs; however, there are requirements for open house signs that are enforced by the Village.

    Requirements for Open House Signs:

    Open house directional signs not exceeding six square feet (per side) in area and four feet in height may be placed within the public right-of-way (parkway) in accordance with the following requirements:

    • Signs may be in place on Saturdays and Sundays between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.
    • Signs must be free-standing and may not be attached to any utility pole, utility structure, tree, or traffic control sign.
    • Attention-attracting devices such as pennants, streamers, balloons, inflatable shapes, banners, flashing lights or other illumination may not be attached to a garage sale sign or placed in the public right-of-way.
    • Each sign must have attached an adhesive label or other means to identify the name, business address and business telephone number of the person responsible for the placement and removal of the sign.
    • No more than four signs for an open house event may be placed in the public right-of-way.
    • No sign greater than 30 inches in height is permitted to be placed within any portion of the 25-foot sight triangle at a street intersection.
    • Only one open house sign may be installed per street intersection, with the exception that no open house signs may be installed at the intersection of Gary Avenue and Lies Road.
