Make sure water discharge from your sump pump is directed at least 10 feet away from the foundation of your home. This helps prevent water from pooling near your basement or foundation, which could cause leaking or flooding.

Avoid Discharge Freezing Hazards:

During the winter months, we often receive reports of sump pumps causing ice to form on sidewalks and streets. In the event of a civil suit, the pump owner could be held liable for any resulting injuries. Additionally, when ice forms on the street, Public Works uses time and resources applying salt, which can harm local waterways through increased pollution. If the ice accumulation becomes hazardous, the Village may issue a citation for “Obstruction of Public Right-of-Way.”

Moving a sump pump hose away from the sidewalk or street and directing it into the backyard can often resolve discharge issues. In situations where the yard slopes toward the front or where the sidewalk cannot be avoided, The Village of Carol Stream Public Works and engineering teams may be able to advise on solutions.

Install a Check Valve:

A check valve in the discharge pipe prevents water from flowing back into the sump pit once the pump turns off. This prevents your pump from working harder than necessary and eliminates backflow.

Prevent Freezing in Winter:

During the winter months, freezing discharge pipes could prevent water from flowing properly. Check the discharge pipe to ensure that water is moving steady.

Keep the Discharge Opening Clear:

Over time, leaves, dirt, and other debris can block the discharge opening, reducing your pump’s effectiveness.

Secure the Discharge Pipe:

Make sure the discharge pipe is properly secured so that it doesn’t get knocked loose during heavy rain, snowmelt, or high winds. Use a pipe bracket or straps to keep it in place, especially if you have a longer pipe running across your yard.

Regular Maintenance

Inspect your sump pump system regularly—especially before the rainy season or winter. Clean the pump, check the discharge pipe, and ensure that everything is functioning properly. Tip: Clear the pit of any debris that might block the pump, and test the system by pouring water into the pit to make sure the pump activates.
