New Automated Tornado Siren System Launches May 1

Beginning May 1, 2025, residents in Carol Stream and other DuPage County communities will benefit from a major upgrade in emergency weather alert systems. DU-COMM (DuPage Public Safety Communications) is launching a new automated tornado siren system designed to activate sirens faster than ever before — giving the public more time to respond during dangerous weather events.

This upgrade is part of DU-COMM’s continued efforts to modernize emergency communication systems using the latest in public safety technology. The system, called the Fulton Siren Controller, replaces older manual activation methods with automated alerts directly linked to National Weather Service (NWS) warnings.

What This Means for You

• Faster Warnings:
Thanks to improved automation, tornado sirens may sound before you receive an alert on your phone or weather app. This is normal — the faster response is by design and intended to give you more time to reach safety.

• Take Shelter Immediately:
If you hear the outdoor warning sirens, don’t wait for additional alerts. Go to your designated safe place right away. Tornado sirens are intended to warn those who are outdoors and may not see or receive digital alerts in time.

• No “All Clear” Siren:
Carol Stream and other DU-COMM communities do not issue an “All Clear” siren. If you hear the sirens sound again, it means a new or continuing threat — not that the danger has passed. Remain sheltered until local media or weather authorities say it’s safe to come out.

Be Prepared and Stay Informed

We encourage all residents to remain weather-aware, especially during severe weather season. Make sure you have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, such as a NOAA weather radio, smartphone apps, and local news. And remember: outdoor warning sirens are just one part of a broader emergency notification system.
