Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

Post Date:09/17/2025 11:30 AM

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month—a time to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and emphasize the importance of mental well-being. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the U.S., ranking among the top nine for individuals ages 10–64, and it is the second leading cause of death among youth ages 10–14 and adults ages 25–34. Awareness and support can save lives.

Recognizing the Signs
Warning signs may include withdrawing from loved ones, changes in sleep or behavior, increased substance use, aggression, or statements of hopelessness such as “I don’t want to live anymore.” It’s essential to recognize these signs in ourselves and others and to know where to turn for help.

Resources If You or Someone You Know Is Struggling:\

  •  In life-threatening emergencies, always dial 911.
  • Call or text 988 – Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (24/7)
  • Call 800-273-8255 or text 741-741 – National Suicide Prevention Lifeline
  • Call the DuPage County Crisis Line: 630-627-1700
  • Visit The Living Room (NAMI DuPage): 630-752-0066
  • Call the Carol Stream Police Dept. Social Services Unit: 630-871-6280

Local Support in Carol Stream

The S.S.U. provides vital services including victim assistance, short-term counseling, support for seniors and immigrants, and crisis intervention. Residents can also connect directly with Social Services staff at community events throughout the year, including library-based social worker pop-ups and outreach events in partnership with the Park District and other local organizations.

Residents of Carol Stream can find more information and resources at the Social Services Department page on the Village website.

Residents of DuPage County can find more resources at DuPageHealth.org.

It’s okay not to be okay. Help is here. You are not alone.
