Each October, communities across the nation come together to raise awareness and take a stand against domestic violence. This observance serves as a reminder that everyone deserves to feel safe, respected, and valued in their relationships—and that help is always available.
Domestic violence affects millions of people in the United States each year, regardless of age, gender, background, or income level. According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, more than 12 million people experience intimate partner violence annually—an average of 24 people every minute. Abuse can take many forms, including physical harm, emotional manipulation, financial control, and isolation from friends and family.
Recognizing the signs of an unhealthy or abusive relationship is an important first step toward prevention and healing. Warning signs may include:
- Extreme Jealousy, including managing what victim wears
- Controlling behavior, such as control of finances
- Isolation from family and friends, limiting communication with others
- Blaming victim whenever anything bad happens
- Making all the decisions in relationship and for the victim
- Minimizing seriousness of violence
- Disregard for victim's unwillingness to have sex or forcing sexual acts
The Carol Stream Police Department’s Social Services Unit provides confidential support, counseling, and assistance for individuals and families affected by domestic violence. The unit can connect residents with protective services, advocacy organizations, and emergency resources.
