As temperatures drop and snow season approaches, the Village of Carol Stream encourages residents to prepare for winter weather conditions. Ice storms and freezing rain events can create hazardous travel conditions and lead to power outages. Taking a few steps now can make a big difference when severe weather strikes.

Prepare Your Home:
Inspect furnace, test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and create an emergency kit with blankets, flashlights, batteries, and water. Disconnect garden hoses and shut off water to exterior spigots to prevent frozen pipes and costly leaks in spring. Leaving a hose connected during winter—even if the water is off—can cause the hose bib to crack, leading to leaks you might not notice until spring.

Prepare Your Vehicle:

Ensure tires are properly inflated, wipers are in good condition, and your gas tank is at least half full. Keep a small winter kit with jumper cables, gloves, a scraper, a blanket, and water in your car.

Stay Informed:

Sign up for local alerts (including CodeRed notifications from the Village website), monitor weather forecasts, and follow the Village for snow operations, parking restrictions, and emergency updates.

Be Cautious:

Slow down on snowy or icy roads, give plows plenty of space, and never pass a snowplow.
