This winter, the Village of Carol Stream will begin a multi-year water meter upgrade project, replacing more than 10,000 aging meters over the next six years. More than 70 percent of the Village’s existing meters are over 20 years old, and research shows that mechanical meters past this age are more prone to failures or reduced accuracy.

As part of the program, the Village will transition from the current “drive-by” reading method to technology that securely transmits water usage data in real time, improving efficiency and resulting in more accurate readings and fairer billing. This system will help identify unusual usage patterns that may indicate a potential leak, giving Village staff the ability to communicate with residents before it results in a high water bill.

All installations will be completed by Village Public Works staff, and residents will receive advance notice to schedule an appointment. Additional details will be shared as the phased rollout begins in January.
