Stay Safe During Extreme Cold – Protect Your Home and Yourself

The Village of Carol Stream is monitoring dangerously cold temperatures this weekend. Public Works is conducting winter operations to keep roads safe, but residents are strongly encouraged to stay indoors and limit travel whenever possible.

Protect Your Home and Pipes:

Frozen pipes can cause costly damage and extensive repairs.

To prevent frozen pipes:

·         Keep garage doors closed.

·         Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to let warm air reach pipes (move chemicals out of reach of children and pets).

·         Consider letting a faucet drip to keep water flowing.

·         Keep your thermostat at a constant temperature day and night; if traveling, do not set below 55°F.

·         Insulate vulnerable pipes and seal cracks or openings in walls.

If a Pipe Freezes:

1.      Turn on the faucet connected to the frozen pipe.

2.      Apply heat with a heating pad, hair dryer, or portable space heater (never use an open flame).

3.      Continue until full water pressure is restored.

4.      Check other faucets for additional frozen pipes.

5.      Call a licensed plumber if necessary or if you are uncomfortable performing these steps yourself.

Vehicle and Travel Safety

·         Stay home and remain indoors during extreme weather, when possible

·         Ensure tires are properly inflated and wipers are in good condition.

·         Keep your gas tank at least half full.

·         Carry a winter kit with jumper cables, gloves, a scraper, a blanket, and water.
