Carol Stream Police Safety Reminders

Post Date:03/05/2026 9:45 AM

Preventing Crimes of Opportunity

The Carol Stream Police Department reminds residents that many crimes, including burglaries and vehicle thefts, are often crimes of opportunity. Unlocked vehicles, open garage doors, and valuables left in plain view can make homes and cars easy targets.

Residents can help reduce risk by building a simple nightly routine to secure their property. A few minutes each evening can help protect your home, your family, and your neighbors.

Consider making the following steps part of your nightly routine:

  • Remove valuables and key fobs from vehicles
  • Lock vehicle doors
  • Close overhead garage doors
  • Lock the door between the garage and home
  • Check and lock windows, doors, gates, and sheds
  • Turn on exterior lights, cameras, or alarm systems

Make it your nightly #9PMRoutine.

If you see suspicious activity in your neighborhood, report it to the Police Department. Community awareness and timely reporting can help prevent crime and keep Carol Stream safe.

Senior Safety Alert: IRS Scams

The Police Department also reminds residents, especially seniors, to be aware of scams during tax season. Fraudsters often impersonate the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to pressure individuals into making fraudulent payments.

Remember:

  • The IRS will not come to your home to collect payment
  • The IRS does not demand payment through gift cards, cash, or wire transfers
  • The IRS does not threaten arrest by phone or text message

If you receive a suspicious call, email, or text message claiming to be from the IRS, hang up or delete the message and do not engage.

Residents who receive scam communications can report them to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1-800-366-4484.

If you believe you have been targeted or victimized by a scam, please report it to the Carol Stream Police Department. Police and community partners are available to help residents stay informed and protected.
