May is Building Safety Month, which is an international champaign promoted by the International Code Council, aimed at raising awareness about the importance of building safety.
Highlighting the adoption and implementation of modern, regularly-updated building codes helps individuals, families, and businesses understand what it takes to create safe and sustainable structures. Building codes help to protect citizens from disasters like fires, weather-related events and structural collapse. Code officials and building inspectors work to keep the public safe, and building codes protect homes, offices, schools, manufacturing facilities, stores and entertainment venues.
Since 1980, the International Code Council series of building codes has contributed toward the construction of safe, sustainable, affordable, and resilient buildings and homes. For 45 years, support for Building Safety Month, and the role code officials play in public safety within the built environment, has come from the U.S. presidents, governors, mayors, county executives, other government officials and construction industry professionals.
