Village Contracts with Interim Director of Police Department
The Village Board approved a contract at their October 21, 2019 Board Meeting with Stephen F. Schmidt to serve as interim Director of the Police Department. Mr. Schmidt formerly served as Chief of Police in Elk Grove Village for 17-years. Chief Schmidt’s 41-year law enforcement career began as a patrol officer and included serving as a Field Evidence Technician, “Officer Friendly” in Crime Prevention, Traffic Specialist, Sergeant, Commander, and Deputy Chief.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Illinois and a Master’s Degree in Management and Development of Human Resources from National Louis University. In addition, he graduated from the FBI Academy, Senior Executive Institute at the University of Virginia, and the School of Police Staff and Command at Northwestern University. Throughout his career his initiatives have included public education, supporting a culture of ethics and high moral standard, improving efficiency and response, and managing high profile events.
The contract is for an initial term of 6-months with an option to renew for up to an additional 6-months and includes oversight of day-to-day Police Department operations, leadership and mentoring responsibilities to the Deputy Chiefs, Command staff and Police Department personnel interested in pursuing the Police Chief position.
