Police Officer Recruitment Process   

Entry Level Applicants 

The Carol Stream Police Department conducts written testing for Entry Level police applicants

 on an annual basis. The process for entry level applicants is as follows:

  • Complete the required entry level application packet                        

  • Attend the mandatory orientation and written exam 

  • Achieve a passing score on the written exam 

  • Pass a background check 

  • Pass an interview with the Fire and Police Board

Lateral Applicants

Lateral entry applications are always accepted. Lateral applicants must meet the basic qualifications to be considered for employment which include but are not limited to: 

  • Complete the required lateral applicant application packet.

  • Must currently serve as a full-time police officer and have been so certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board (or its out-of-state equivalent) with a minimum of 1 year experience.  

  • Applicants must be at least age 21, and less than age 35 on the date of application per provisions in the Illinois State Statute addressing age of applicants for entry-level appointments. The age exceptions included in 65 ILCS 5/10-2.1-6(a) and (d) will apply. 

  • Applicants must agree to reside within the state of Illinois.

  • Applicants must be able to successfully pass a polygraph, background investigation and oral interview. After a conditional job offer, but prior to actual employment, must successfully pass a psychological exam, physical agility test (P.O.W.E.R test) and medical examination, all in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
