Improving Our City with New “Advanced” Water Meters
The Village of Carol Stream is launching a multi-year initiative to upgrade all existing Badger water meters to Sensus smart meters as part of a system-wide capital improvement project. Over the next six years, more than 10,000 meters will be replaced throughout the community. All installation work will be performed by Village Public Works staff.
More than 70% of the Village’s existing water meters are over 20 years old, and studies show that mechanical water meters begin to lose accuracy after two decades of service. The current “drive-by” reading process requires Public Works staff to travel throughout the Village each billing cycle to manually collect readings.
To address this, the Village is upgrading to the Sensus Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system, which securely transmits water usage data in real time and eliminates the need for drive-by collection. This technology is widely used by municipalities throughout the region and has been shown to improve efficiency and accuracy. It also enhances customer service by enabling early detection of potential leaks, allowing the Village to notify residents promptly and help prevent unexpected high-water bills.
Additional information will be shared in the coming months regarding how residents can schedule an appointment for installation once the phased rollout begins.
