An individual 18 years or older must be present during the installation. Any items blocking access to the water meter, such as appliances or furniture, must be moved prior to Public Works employees arriving. Public Works staff are not able to assist with moving these items. 

Yes. The new meters transmit a short, low-power radio signal that allows the Village to collect meter readings without entering the home.

The signal is significantly lower than everyday household devices such as Wi-Fi routers, cell phones, baby monitors, or garage door openers. The transmission is brief and occurs only a few seconds per day.

The system meets all FCC (Federal Communications Commission) safety standards for radio frequency emissions and is widely used by municipalities across the country.

Most installations are typically completed within 15 to 30 minutes. During this time, water service will be temporarily interrupted while the replacement is performed.

Please make sure Public Works employees have clear and safe access to the meter (remove boxes, furniture, stored items, etc.). This will assist in a quicker installation time. 

Yes. The Sensus AMI system uses encrypted, secure transmission technology. No personal or billing information is transmitted—only meter usage data.

No. The installation is provided at no direct cost to residents as part of the Village’s infrastructure capital improvement program.

Appointments are scheduled Monday–Friday between 7:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. 

All installations will be performed by Village of Carol Stream Public Works staff, not outside contractors. Village employees will arrive in official Public Works vehicles clearly marked with the Public Works logo. If you would like to confirm the identity of a Public Works employee, please contact the Village of Carol Stream Public Works Department.

Perhaps your bill may show a change as a result of increased accuracy. If the previous meter was under-registering water usage, the new meter may reflect slightly higher consumption because it is recording usage more precisely.
