Improving Water Service Through Meter Upgrades

The Village of Carol Stream is set to begin a multi-year initiative to upgrade all existing Badger water meters to Sensus meters as part of a system-wide capital improvement project. Over the next six years, more than 10,500 residential meters will be replaced. All installation work will be performed by Village Public Works staff.

More that 70% of the Village's existing mechanical water meters have been in service over 20 years. As meters age, they become less accurate and require more maintenance. In addition, the current "drive-by" reading process is time-consuming, requiring Public Works staff to travel throughout the Village each month to manually collect readings.

To improve efficiency and service to residents, the Village is transitioning to the Sensus Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system. This technology, widely used by municipalities throughout the region, securely transmits water usage data in real time, eliminates drive-by collection, and provides more accurate readings. It helps identify unusual usage patterns that may indicate a potential leak, giving Village staff the ability to evaluate and engage with our residents to address the issue before it results in an unexpectedly high water bill.

Residents will receive a letter explaining how to schedule an appointment for their meter replacement. Additional updates will be shared on this page as the phases rollout begins this winter.
